On 12 December 2024, Belgium filed a declaration of intervention under Article 63 of the Statute of the Court in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar: 7 States intervening).

The public hearings on the request for an advisory opinion on the Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change concluded on 13 December 2024. The Court will now begin its deliberation. Its advisory opinion will be delivered at a public sitting, the date of which will be announced in due course.

Yesterday, HE Mr Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic of Portugal, paid a visit to the International Court of Justice. During a meeting with the President and Registrar of the Court, President Rebelo de Sousa expressed his appreciation for the key role that the Court plays in current international relations and underlined Portugal’s respect for its decisions.

The ICJ announces the publication of the four volumes of I.C.J. Pleadings, Armed Activities on the Territory of the Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Uganda). These volumes of the I.C.J. Pleadings contain the Application instituting proceedings, the written pleadings, the verbatim records of the hearings and other documents filed by the Parties in the case.

Yesterday, the President of the Court, HE Judge Nawaf Salam, met with United Nations Secretary-General, HE António Guterres in New York. During the meeting, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the work of the Court, underscoring its important mandate to clarify the legal aspects of international disputes.  

The International Court of Justice announces the publication of its Catalogue 2023-2024, which details all the titles published since its establishment in 1946 until 31 July 2024, and the New Publications catalogue, which presents the publications released between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024.

The public hearings on the merits in the case concerning Land and Maritime Delimitation and Sovereignty over Islands (Gabon/Equatorial Guinea) concluded today, 4 October 2024. The Court will now begin its deliberation. The Court’s decision will be delivered at a public sitting, the date of which will be announced in due course.
