Visit by the Court to the site of the Gabcíkovo-Nagymaros
hydro-electric dam project
The Hague, 11 February 1997. In 1995 the Agent of Slovakia asked the Court, by letter, to visit the site of the Gabcíkovo-Nagymaros hydro-electric dam project on the river Danube with regard to the obtaining of evidence in the above case. The Agent of Hungary thereupon informed the Court that his country would be pleased to co-operate in organizing such a visit.
In November 1995, in Budapest and New York, the two Parties then signed a "Protocol of Agreement" on the proposal of a visit by the Court, which, after dates had been fixed with the approval of the Court, was supplemented by Agreed Minutes on 3 February 1997.
By an Order of 5 February 1997 the Court decided to "exercise its functions with regard to the obtaining of evidence by visiting a place or locality to which the case relates" (cf. Art. 66 of the Rules of Court) and to "adopt to that end the arrangements proposed by the Parties".
